Nestled within the Financial District's iconic Mechanics Institute building, the ground floor tenants embarked on the transformation of a former bank into their new bar establishment. Our task was to preserve elements of the bank's traditional carpentry, seamlessly integrating them into the modern design of the new venue. Leveraging substantial and distinctive art installations, we achieved a harmonious fusion of these two distinct styles.
Working within a structure that boasts more than a century and a half of history presented numerous challenges, particularly when navigating the city's intricate permitting processes, especially for a new bar establishment. A standout feature of this project was the vision to repurpose the old, room-sized bank vault into a private space. Regrettably, stringent city safety requirements compelled us to defer this aspect of the project, with intentions to revisit it at a later date. However, the COVID-19 pandemic ultimately rendered this idea unfeasible.
